Compatible Viking Models

Intended compatibility

  • Viking Javelin 14
  • Viking Javlin 14 — historical catalogue spelling
  • Viking Oxygen
  • Viking Oxygen 570 / Oxygen 5.7
  • Super Viking Ocean Ski

What is included

  • 1 × genuine Viking nylon replacement rudder
  • Integral nylon rudder shaft

Not included: T-bar, steering lines, foot controls or other steering components.

The Javelin 14 was also written as “Javlin 14” in some original Viking catalogues and product listings. Both names refer to the compatible Viking ocean ski model covered by this replacement rudder.

These are older craft, and individual fittings or previous repairs can vary. Compare the replacement part with your existing rudder assembly before modifying it. If you are unsure, contact Kayak and SUP with clear photos of the existing rudder shaft, T-bar and rudder housing before ordering.

DIY Trimming and Drilling

The Javelin and Oxygen can require different installed shaft lengths. For this reason, the rudder shaft is supplied without a pre-drilled retaining hole. This allows the final shaft height and hole position to be matched to the individual ski and T-bar.

  1. Test-fit the rudder shaft through the ski’s existing rudder tube.
  2. Fit or position the compatible T-bar and confirm the required shaft height.
  3. Mark the final shaft length and the retaining-hole position carefully.
  4. Trim a small amount from the top of the nylon shaft only if required.
  5. Drill the retaining hole through the shaft to suit the T-bar’s existing bolt or pin.
  6. Secure the assembly and confirm that the rudder moves freely in both directions.

The drilling described here is performed on the replacement nylon rudder shaft—not on the kayak hull.

Nylon is straightforward to cut and drill using ordinary tools suitable for plastic or nylon. Use a fine-tooth cutting tool and a correctly sized drill bit for your existing bolt or pin. Measure and test-fit carefully before removing material.

If you are not confident completing the modification accurately, have the rudder fitted by an experienced kayak repairer or technician.

Restore Foot-Controlled Steering

The Viking Javelin and Oxygen use a foot-controlled under-stern rudder to provide directional control. When correctly fitted and connected through the T-bar, the replacement rudder responds to steering-line and foot-pedal input, helping the ski hold its heading and change direction in wind, current, chop and surf.

Checks Before Returning to the Water

  • The retaining bolt or pin is fully secured.
  • The T-bar is centred when the rudder is straight.
  • The rudder turns freely without binding.
  • The steering lines are correctly attached.
  • Both steering lines are evenly tensioned.
  • There is no unwanted vertical movement.

Complete the first water test in calm, controlled conditions before relying on the replacement rudder offshore or in surf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which kayaks and ocean skis is this rudder compatible with?

It is intended for the Viking Javelin 14, also historically listed as the Viking Javlin 14, the Viking Oxygen and Oxygen 570/5.7, and the Super Viking Ocean Ski. Because these are older craft, compare your existing assembly or contact us with photos if you are unsure.

Can I use this rudder by itself?

No. The rudder must be connected to a compatible T-bar so the foot controls and steering lines can turn it.

Is the T-bar included?

No. This listing is for one replacement rudder only. The compatible T-bar is sold separately and must also be purchased if your original T-bar is missing, damaged or unusable.

Why is the retaining hole not pre-drilled?

The required installed shaft length can differ between the Javelin, Oxygen and individual older craft. The hole must be marked and drilled after test-fitting so it aligns correctly with the T-bar’s bolt or pin.

Will I need to shorten the rudder shaft?

Possibly. The top of the shaft may need minor trimming to achieve the correct installed length for your ski. Test-fit and measure carefully before removing any material.

Is the nylon difficult to cut and drill?

No. Nylon is relatively straightforward to work with using an ordinary fine-tooth cutting tool and a standard drill with a correctly sized bit. Work carefully, drill squarely and remove only the minimum material required.

Do I need to drill into my kayak?

No. The DIY drilling described on this page is for the replacement nylon rudder shaft so it can accept the T-bar’s retaining bolt or pin. Do not drill the kayak hull for this step.

Is this an original Viking Kayaks part?

Yes. This is a genuine original Viking replacement rudder for the compatible models listed on this page.

Is stock limited?

Yes. Current availability is very limited and stock is offered only while supplies last.

What should I check after installation?

Before launching, confirm that the bolt or pin is secure, the T-bar and rudder are centred, the steering lines are correctly attached and tensioned, and the rudder moves freely in both directions. Carry out the first water test in calm, controlled conditions.
